The windmills of Mallorca
- Majorcan windmills
It is hard to imagine a Mallorcan countryside without its typical windmills. These romantic ruins of a bygone era with its imposing blades are an icon of the Majorcan countryside. The windmills are scaterred all of Mallorca however Es Pla (the central part of the island) is where the most are located hence this romantic view you can from the airplane shortly before landing at Palma airport.
Majorca's local goverment (Consell de Mallorca) started in 2004 together with the association of Mallorcan windmills friends (Associació d'Amics dels Molins de Mallorca) a programme to restore and save the windmills of Mallorca, which considers these beautiful giants as a national treasure in extinction hazard and is dedicated to the restoration and preservation of old windmills in Majorca.
Although they have now lost their original function to use wind power to grind flour or draw water from the islands underground reserves, Majorcan windmills have a very important patrimonial value as evidence of past economic, social and cultural development of Mallorca. In any Majorcan village you will find these endearing "monuments".
