Valldemossa is a charming village sitting on the slopes of the Tramuntana mountains located 15 kilometres north of Palma de Mallorca with approximately 2,000 inhabitants.

Valldemossa is undoubtedly one of the most visited villages in Mallorca, as soon as you arrive you will immediately know why, steep narrow streets meander through the enchanting town surrounded by almond, thousand-year-old olive trees and the breathtaking mountains ... an absolute Mediterranean dream, a wonderful combination of magic, idyllic, bucolic, mystic, stunning scenery, Valldemossa is certainly unique. Valldemossa is ancient Moorish village that quietly boasts a good collection of shops, restaurants and bars.

Valldemossa was the birthplace of Santa Catalina (the only saint of Mallorca), you can visit the small chapel in the house where she was born in 1533. One of the landmarks of Valldemosa is its famous Carthusian monastery that once provided a roof for Fryderyk Chopin, the Polish composer and his lover the French writer George Sand spent a Winter (1838-9), during their stay Chopin composed part of the Op. 28 preludes and Sand wrote "A Winter in Majorca". Valldemossa is what it is now thanks to the Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria when settled on Majorca bought wild areas in order to preserve and enjoy them, his main residence was Son Marroig, between Valldemossa and Deià is now a museum, much of what was his property in the area now belongs to the American actor Michael Douglas, Douglas and his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones spend long periods of time in his residence near Valldemossa - S'Estaca.

While holidaying in Valledemossa it's worth to visit its port, just after leaving Valldemossa towards Banyalbafur there is a turn off about a kilometre or so after Valldemossa that twists and turns for 6 kilometres to the Port de Valldemossa. This was once an important connection to the outside world. The shingly beach offers one possibility to bathe among the waves and a restaurant is known for its excellent seafood.

Also don't miss the nearby mountain village of Deià, many celebrities still visit this part of Mallorca which offers a picturesque and peaceful retreat. Deià was once home to Robert Graves, his grave can be found in the hilltop cemetery next to the church.
